Shah Alam — The High Court here on Thursday sentenced to death Samsul Bahri, 28, a member of Indonesian political party Partai Aceh, for trafficking in 2.7kg of cannabis.
He was convicted of committing the offence at Kawasan Blok 1, Jalan PP 40, Pangsapuri Seri Mas, Taman Pinggiran Putra in Seri Kembangan at about 5.30pm on March 16, 2009.
Justice Ghazali Cha said in his ruling that the accused struggled when he was arrested by the police.
The accused, in his defence, claimed that he had thought the plastic bag (that contained the drugs) had a pair of jeans and a t-shirt. He alleged that the bag was given to him by a man named Fauzan.
However, Justice Ghazali said the accused should have been able to distinguish the difference in the weight of a 2.7kg worth of drugs and two pieces of clothes.
“This only shows that the accused had knowledge of the drugs. The story of Fauzan is merely an after thought. I find the defence failed to raise a reasonable doubt in the case,” said the judge.
